wrong,â she said. âMrs. Edwards and Nancy both have bags from the Elmford Shopping Center. And they went somewhere together last night. I keep worrying that theyâre doing something to hurt Mr. Taylorâs store. That would be wrong.â
âBut how would Tony know about that?â Violet asked.
âI donât know,â Jessie said.
Henry thought for a minute. Then he said, âI think itâs time to talk to someone about this.â
âI do, too,â Jessie said. âIâll feel a lot better when we know whatâs going on.â
âI wish we could call Aunt Jane right now,â Violet said. âBut we donât have a telephone.â
âMr. Taylor has one in his cabin,â Jessie said. âBut he said he was going into Elmford for dinner.â
âThen weâll just have to wait until tomorrow to call,â Henry said. âBut weâll take care of it the first thing in the morning.â
Very early the next morning, Violet heard a noise outside their cabin. At first she thought it might be an animal. Then she heard voices. One of them was Nancyâs. Violet sat up and looked at Jessie.
Jessie was awake, too. Jessie said to Violet, âGo wake Henry.â
Jessie got out of bed and went to the window. It was just starting to get light. When she looked out, she saw Nancy and Mrs. Edwards. Nancy was dressed. Mrs. Edwards was in a blue bathrobe.
Violet came back into the room with Henry. âWhatâs happening?â he whispered, tying the belt of his bathrobe.
âIâm not sure,â Jessie whispered back.
The three of them stood close to the window and peered outside.
âPlease!â Nancy said to Mrs. Edwards. âI have to get to town.â
Mrs. Edwards shook her head. âItâs too early.â She sounded nervous. âWhy donât you wait a while?â
âI canât!â Nancy said. âItâs too important to wait!â
âIâm sorry,â Mrs. Edwards said.
âPlease,â Nancy said again. âI have to go!â
Jessie looked at Henry. He nodded. If Nancy was going somewhere, they had to talk to her first.
The three Aldens opened the door and went outside. When Nancy and Mrs. Edwards saw them, they were surprised.
âJessie, Henry, Violet,â Nancy said. âWhat are you doing up? Did we wake you?â
âYes, but weâre glad you did,â Jessie said. She took a deep breath. âNancy, we need to talk to you. Itâs important.â
âJessie, you look so worried,â Nancy said. âI donât understand.â
âThere are a lot of things we donât understand, Nancy,â Henry said. âThings about you.â
âAbout me?â Nancy bit her lip. âBut. . .â
Before Nancy could say anything more, the door to Mr. Taylorâs cabin opened and Mr. Taylor came out. He was dressed, but he looked very sleepy. âWhatâs going on?â he asked.
âOh, Mr. Taylor, Iâm sorry,â Nancy said. âI wanted to use a telephone, but I didnât want to wake you. So I was going to ask this lady to drive me to the nearest phone.â
âThe phone?â Mrs. Edwards said. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âI was in such a hurry,â Nancy explained. âI couldnât think straight.â
âNancy, why did you call Mrs. Edwards âthis ladyâ?â Jessie asked. âWe thought you knew her.â
Nancy shook her head. âShe gave me a ride to town the other night, but she never told me her name.â
âI was afraid to say much,â Mrs. Edwards said. âI was afraid you might guess who I am and why Iâm here.â
Nancy looked confused. âI donât understand.â
âNeither do I,â said Mr. Taylor.
âI think I understand a little of it,â Jessie said.
âMe too,â Henry said. âBut not
