like you already guessed. How did you do that?â
âBecause you couldnât work the cash register or anything,â Henry said. âIf you had worked a lot, you would have known how.â
âYouâre right,â Nancy said again. She took a sip of juice. âIâm sorry I lied to you, Mr. Taylor,â she said. âI needed the job so much.â
Mr. Taylor chuckled. âI had a feeling you hadnât worked much,â he told her. âBut itâs all right, Nancy. My customers liked you a lot.â
âWe all like you a lot, too, Nancy,â Jessie said. âBut we kept noticing things about you that didnât make sense.â
âLike what?â Nancy asked.
Before anyone could answer, there was a knock at the cabin door. It was the young man named Tony. âIâm sorry to bother you,â he said to Henry, who opened the door. âIâm looking for Nancy Baldwin. Have you seen her?â
âTony!â Nancy cried. She jumped up from the chair as Henry let Tony in. âI called Mother and Dad,â she told him. âIâm coming home. And then Iâm going to college.â
Tony looked very happy. âThatâs great, Nancy!â
Nancy turned to the others. âThis is my brother,â she said. âTony Baldwin.â
âWe thought he might be your brother,â Jessie said. âOr your boyfriend.â
âYou mean youâve met?â Nancy asked.
âNot exactly,â Violet said. âBut I saw his picture in your room that morning Jessie and I came to get you. And when he came into the store yesterday, I recognized him.â
âYou sure did guess a lot about me,â Nancy said. Suddenly, she looked at Mrs. Edwards, who had been sitting quietly on the couch, listening to the conversation. âIâm sorry,â she said to Mrs. Edwards. âI know your name. But I still donât know who you are.â
âI do, Nancy,â Tony said. âMrs. Edwards is a private investigator.â
âWow!â Benny said. âA real one?â
Mrs. Edwards smiled. She had a nice smile. âYes, a real one,â she said.
âMother and Dad hired her to find you and keep an eye on you,â Tony explained to Nancy. âThey wanted to know you were safe.â
âSo thatâs why you went into her cabin,â Violet said. âTo make sure she was the right Nancy.â
âAnd thatâs why I didnât want to drive you anywhere this morning,â Mrs. Edwards said to Nancy. âYou were in such a hurry, I thought you were running away again.â
âNow I feel silly,â Jessie said to Mrs. Edwards. âI thought you and Nancy might be doing something together to hurt Mr. Taylorâs store.â She told them about the shopping bags. âI'm glad I was wrong.â
âI bought things at the shopping center because I didnât want to keep coming into the general store,â Mrs. Edwards said. âI didnât want Nancy to suspect me.â
âI bought my alarm clock there,â Nancy said. âAnd a few other things. But I would never do anything to hurt Mr. Taylorâs store.â
âWe know that now,â Jessie said with a smile.
âIâm going to miss working there,â Nancy said. âEven though I wasnât very good at it.â
âWhat did Mom and Dad say when you talked to them?â Tony asked.
âThey said theyâd try not to tell me what to do so much,â Nancy answered. âI didnât think they would be so understanding.â
âItâs like when we ran away from Grandfather,â Benny said. âWe didnât know how kind he was.â
âThatâs right, Benny,â Violet said. Suddenly, Jessie jumped up from her chair by the table. âEveryone must be starving,â she said. âLetâs have some breakfast.â
âTell me what else you figured
