getting to know her better over the winter. Iâm dying to see Hollywood and where she lives. She says Ava and I have a standing invitation to visit, but I donât know if sheâs just being polite.â
âIf she said it, she meant it,â Russ said, nothing casual about him as he watched Ruby fidget and squirm.
Ruby turned to Mark. âHowâs everything at Moss Hill?â
âFine. Why?â
But she swung around to Russ. âNo problems with your apartment?â
His eyes narrowed on her. âNone.â
âThatâs good,â Ruby said half under her breath. âGood, good.â
Jess, seated at the far end of the table, leaned forward. âIs something on your mind, Ruby?â
She didnât respond at once. She took a breath and fixed her gaze on Russ. âWe could have a situation brewing with Saturday.â
Kylie went still. Was this why she was invited to lunch? She felt a subtle change in Russ as he studied Ruby. âWhat kind of situation?â he asked.
âProblems with codes, permits, fire extinguishers. I donât know. Not my area of expertise.â
âProblems at Moss Hill, you mean?â Jess asked, clearly shocked.
Ruby nodded. âMy mother says someone is spreading rumors around town about possible safety violations and cut corners.â
Mark bristled visibly. âThere are no problems at Moss Hill.â
Jess gasped. âWho is spreading these rumors? Has anyone said anything directly to your mother?â
âYou know Mom,â Ruby said. âIf a blade of grass has a complaint about a lawn mower, sheâll hear about it. Sheâs tuned in to town gossip. This will be the first event at the mill. All we need is some crank causing trouble. Ava and I arenât professional meeting planners, but weâve done everything possible to dot every i and cross every t . Mark, are you sureââ
âIâm sure,â he said stiffly. âYou have nothing to worry about.â
âWhat if a contractor cut a corner you donât know about?â
Jess touched Rubyâs shoulder. âYouâre getting spooled up.â
âI know. I am. Iâve been stewing since Mom told me about the rumors last night. Iâm worried someoneâs trying to sabotage us.â
âWhy would anyone want to do that?â Jess asked.
âBecause people can be jerks,â Ruby snapped.
Kylie said nothing. Russ Colton hadnât said a word since his initial question to Ruby, either. The meals arrived. Ruby looked as if she regretted ordering a sandwich. Jess snatched two fries off Markâs plate before trying her soup. Kylie hadnât expected the conversation to turn to news of unpleasant rumors. Was that why Ruby had invited her to lunch? But Kylie couldnât see how she could help unravel what, if anything, was going on.
Ruby stared at her sandwich. âWhat if someone doesnât want Daphne hereâor just doesnât want Moss Hill to host events?â
Mark lifted a triangle of his club sandwich. âA mixed-purpose space was always in the plans for Moss Hill. Itâs no surprise to anyone weâll be hosting a variety of events there. As far as I can see, people are excited about having that kind of space in town. There have been no problems or complaints.â
âNot everyone is excited, obviously,â Ruby said. âMy mother says she has no idea who is behind the rumors.â
âIs this sort of talk unusual around here?â Russ asked.
âKnights Bridge is a small town,â Mark said. âPeople talk. They have their grudges. But nasty rumors like this? Iâd say itâs unusual.â
Ruby seemed to make an effort to try a small bite of her sandwich. âI havenât lived here full-time since I started college, but I canât think of anyone who would want to sabotage a class by a Hollywood icon whoâs donating her time...â She
