for the better.
“We went to school together in high school , and a bit in college. We ran into each other the other day and just got to talking.”
“How lovely, did you run into each other outside of the country club too?” Polly asked, clearly not understanding her son’s slumming choices.
“Of course not. I invited her today, you always say I can bring someone.”
I practically heard the curses bouncing around in her head. “Of course you can. Well, come on over to the table so we can get started.”
“Sweet! I’m starving.”
Polly gave me one more look before whipping back around to lead the way to the table, nose held high in the air. Kayne gave a little smile that said this was going better than he thought. I offered a miniscule one back. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kayne had always had a problem of reading women’s thoughts, because right now he seemed to be clueless.
“Look who’s here Joel.” Polly announced as we reached the table. Apparently she already felt the need to call in for reinforcements with dealing with the unwanted woman, aka me .
Kayne stopped at an oval shaped table , and I stepped to his side to take in who else I would be irritating this afternoon. The table held six seats one for Polly, and next to her was a woman that looked almost identical with the same blonde hair, and scowl on her face. Then at the head of the table was a man who slowly stood to pull out the chair for Polly. I didn’t get a good look at him, because on the far side of the table staring intensely was the man I hadn’t been able to get out of my mind.
A wicked gleam in his eye matched the smirk on those sexy lips. I wondered if the smirk was because he heard my exchange with Polly, or because I was here in general. I let a touch of a smile catch his eye before forcing myself to look away. All I wanted to do was stare, but I did not want to make it that obvious to the others.
“Happy birthday, bud.”
The other man at the table approached Kayne with a big smile. “Thanks, dad.” A few pats on the back later and the men parted.
“Andie, this is my dad, Joel.”
Joel looked at me with a smile, instantly holding out his hand to me. In his face I saw an almost perfect mix of Onyx and Kayne. All three men had the same strong bone structure, they were tall, toned, and were easy on the eyes. Joel was by far the cleanest shaven of the bunch, but I was sure if he grew his hair out, he would look almost like Onyx’s twin. Almost. Joel didn’t have those smoldering eyes, or mysterious aura about him.
“Great to meet you, Andie. We’re happy to have you.” He released my hand soon after grabbing it , but I felt a genuine sense about him that Polly severely lacked.
“This here is my Aunt Kate.” Kayne said , pointing to the stuck up woman sitting next to Polly.
She didn’t even bother shaking my hand. Instead she reached for her champagne flute , and raised it to acknowledge me. “Pleasure, dear.”
A sidelong glance at Kayne told me he was not expecting that reaction. Oh well, I was. I only gave a stiff nod back before waiting for Kayne to give the last introduction.
The nerves in my stomach churned in anticipation. I hadn’t been able to pay the attention to him that I had wanted at first, but now, I could.
Kayne turned to his side, as he stood between Onyx and I, beginning his introduction. “And finally, this is my Uncle Onyx. Onyx, this is my good friend Andie.”
Onyx stood to his feet, reached for my slowly outstretching hand , and took it between both of his. The endlessly dark pools of his eyes captured mine, and held my gaze on his. The dark curtains of his hair fell forward so the others couldn’t see the true intensity held within him—only me.
“It is a true pleasure to meet you.”
“You as well.” The air in my lungs collapsed as his lips turned up in a smirk that told me he hadn’t forgotten our moment. He still remembered the secret meeting we shared.
