âPastoral Associate,â Escalante answered, âand I agree heâs following orders to keep his mouth shut. We asked to see Thompsonâs personnel file, but Leahy said it had been transferred to the Diocese in Monterey.â
âThatâs what Shotwell told me about Benedettiâs when I called her,â Miller added.
âSo Escalante and I drove to Monterey to see Monsignor Donald Winfield, the Vicar General.â
âThe what?â Fields wasnât Catholic.
âA Vicarâs a mouthpiece for a Bishopâin this case, Bishop Jeffrey Davidson, who didnât make a personal appearance, and according to Winfield, doesnât know anything either. Winfieldâs also Diocese Operations and Personnel Director.â
âThen heâs got Thompson and Benedettiâs personnel folders.â
âThatâs what we figured.â Escalanteâs face showed a rare emotionâfrustration. âBut he wouldnât confirm or deny that their files were transferred to Diocese headquarters or, for that matter, that they even have personnel records.â
âOf course they have records.â Granz sighed. âDid Winfield say anything at all?â
âYes, he said if police want personnel files, weâve gotta get âem through legal channels.â
âThatâs what he said?â
Miller pulled an unfiltered Camel out of his pack, started to light up, glanced around and thought better of it. âCanât smoke anyplace anymore. Itâs un-American.â
He dropped the cigarette on the table. âEscalante sugarcoated it. Winfield said if cops want to see their records, they have to get a court order, and they better be ready for a, quote, âhell of a legal battle.ââ
âGreat.â Granz ran his fingers through his hair.
âIt gets worse. Winfield says we canât contact any Diocese employee without clearing it through the Bishop first.â
Mackay frowned. âThey canât tell us who we can and canât talk to.â
âNo, but they can make it as difficult as possible if they want to,â Miller told her.
âDid you ask whether or not the Diocese has received complaints of sexual misconduct against their priests?â
âYeah, we did. Winfield said the Diocese handed over a dozen cases involving allegations of sexual abuse of minors by priests to the Monterey County DA. I checked with Montereyâtheyâre looking into cases from nineteen fifty-three through ninety-four but havenât filed any charges yet.â
âWhat about our county?â Mackay asked.
âAccording to Winfield, thereâve been no reportable cases in Santa Rita.â
âDid you remind him of the four civil lawsuits filed against the Diocese in the past twenty years, alleging sexual misconduct on the part of priests at three of our local parishes?â
âDamn straight.â
âAnd?â
âHe said they involved consensual sex with adults and the cases were settledâthere was nothing to report to authorities. He says theyâve cleaned house.â
âYou think he was being truthful?â Mackay asked.
Miller glanced at Escalante, who answered, âItâs impossible to say for sure, but he emphatically denied that any priest now serving in the Monterey Diocese is a pedophile. My gut instinct says he was telling the truth.â
âLetâs hope so,â Mackay said. âOn the other hand, letâs not overlook the possibility theyâre misleading us. When thereâs a cover-up, it usually comes from the highest level.â
âThatâs true,â Miller continued, âand it looks like word got to Monterey that we wanted to talk to them before Escalante and I did. Winfield gave me this.â Miller handed Mackay a sheet of paper. âLegal Department letterhead.â
âGerald Scalisi, of Counsel,â Mackay read
