lied. It popped out of her mouth before she could reason that he and Jennie would probably think it was quite cool. But they might tell people at school and
they
might tell a parent and then
her
parents would know within the hour. The town worked like that.
Theyâd only just reached Stanâs room when they heard the front door close and Jennie chatting to Mrs Randall in the hall. She made her way up the stairs at half her normal speed. As soon as she stepped into the bedroom, Sally could tell that sheâd been crying. âHey, whatâs up, Mitten?â
âNothing.â Jennie took her jacket off but wouldnât look her in the eye. This was not the pastel-grunge-bubblegum Jennie they were used to.
âJen . . . something is clearly wrong.â
Stan pushed the popcorn to one side. âIs it Kyle?â His nostrils flared along with his temper.
âWe had a fight and now he wonât return my texts. I donât know where he is. Iâm really worried about him.â
Stan muttered something under his breath, but Sally guided Jennie to the bed so she didnât hear him. âIâm sure heâs fine. What was the fight about?â
Jennie blinked back fresh tears. She fiddled with her
Satanville
bracelets as she spoke. âItâs so stupid. Kyle read some stuff Iâd written on the Order of the First forum and he saw that Iâd been chatting to some guy in America.â
Sally frowned at Stan. âWell, so what?â
âHe said that I was flirting. I wasnât, though! We were just chatting â but heâs still really cross, because you know how months ago he found out Iâd been talking to my ex on Facebook.â Jennie checked her phone again only to throw it onto the mattress in dismay.
Stan, at his laptop, flicked onto the forum Jennie was talking about. âJennie, this is not cool. He canât stalk you online like that! You didnât even say anything remotely flirty.â
âI know!â
Sally tried to keep her tone even and non-judgemental. âAnd he shouldnât be going through your stuff like that. Do you hack into his Facebook too?â
âNo! Well, maybe a couple of times . . . if he leaves himself logged in.â
Sally sighed. âJen! That is so messed up!â
âI know, but I didnât do anything. I donât know why heâs ignoring me.â
âBecause heâs a knoblin,â Stan mumbled.
âWhat?â Jennie looked to him.
âBecause heâs annoying,â Stan said, joining them on the bed. âJennie, heâs making you über-miserable.â
Jennie scowled at him. âNo, he isnât!â she said vehemently. âI love him.â In that moment, she sounded
young
and Sally fought an urge to shake her friend by the shoulders.
But Sally held her tongue, the way she always did. âJennie, you and Kyle fall out all the time. You always work it out in the end. Itâll be fine.â
Stan started to argue. âThis is bullshââ
âStan, youâre not helping.â Sallyâs voice was steady but firm. âBut he shouldnât be checking your Facebook. Itâs a violation of privacy and itâs not cool.â
Her cool tone seemed to lure Jennie off the ceiling. âI know. I know. Thanks, Sal.â Jennie flung her skinny arms around Sally and squeezed her tight. Too tight. The tattoo burned and Sallyâs eyes bulged in pain.
âOw!â
Jennie let go. âWhat?â
âNothing.â She lied again, but too quickly. She felt like a little kid standing inside the pantry, icing all around her mouth.
âWhatâs going on?â Stan asked, scrutinising her.
âNothing,â she repeated, before adding, âThat time of the month.â
Stan dropped it at once, the way she suspected any guy would. âOh. Right . . .â
She could have so easily told them, but she didnât want to
