tagged along with Dan as he talked to customers. By the time the party wrapped up, she was ready to go back to the room. And ready for Dan to come back with her.
The night out had refreshed her spirits. Dressing up and being admired for how she looked, talking with people who didn’t know her troubles, and laughing as though those same problems didn’t exist had done her a world of good. But now she wanted to be held and reassured that the good feelings of the night could bolster her into the next day.
And if she was honest with herself, she had to admit she wanted to be alone with Dan. Each time he touched her, his fingers had seared their imprint. His eyes had glowed with pride and something like desire. She’d found herself stepping closer to him, leaning into the contact and smiling back in a way she hoped said she welcomed whatever he wanted to give her.
Dan helped Mary with her light shawl. “What would you like to do for the rest of the evening?” Before she could say she wanted to go back to the room, he added, “I guess we could go to the room, but we’re dressed up and the night is young.”
Damn. “I don’t know. If it was just you and Pete what would you do?”
“Knowing Pete, he’d suggest a strip club. But I’m sure you don’t want to do that.”
“Are you?” Mary met his gaze, unsure. Here she was in Las Vegas, definitely bird of paradise territory. She had a chance to step out of her sweet violet persona. She took a breath. She could be bold when she wanted to. Maybe.
“Well then,” she suggested, “why don’t we find him and see if he wants to go to the Wild Flower Club? I’ve heard it’s pretty interesting.” And the name was apt, considering she was about to change species of flora.
Dan burst into laughter. His eyes twinkled when he fixed them on her. “What in the world do you know about the Wild Flower Club?”
“Enough to wonder what all the fuss is about.”
“Enough to know the girls strip nude?”
She made a face of faux shock. “Dan Higgins, how do you know about this club?”
    “I’m not telling.”
“Well, it’s all Ralph could talk about after we decided to come to Las Vegas. He told me the girls will put on private shows if they’re tipped well.”
“Your new husband was planning to take you to a club where he could get a lap dance? I hope I get the chance to punch him someday.” Dan shook his head. “At any rate, you’re too well informed. Let’s find Pete. Any lap dances tonight are all his.”
They pried Pete away from a blackjack table without too much trouble and set out for The Wild Flower Club at the north end of the Strip.
By the time a cocktail waitress wearing nothing but a very brief skirt and silk scarf wrapped around her neck brought Dan and Mary their third drinks, Pete was nowhere to be seen. On stage, a dancer wore a belt to hold the money men tucked there, and nothing else. She moved seductively around the center pole, stretching and undulating to the beat of the music.
No wonder Ralph talked about this place so much. It’s all sex, everywhere you look. “Dan, where’s Pete?”
“I don’t know.” Dan half stood and looked around. “Isn’t that him up at the stage with the dancer wiggling her naked ass in his face?”
Mary followed Dan’s gaze. “Looks like he’s having a good time, doesn’t it?”
    “Sure does.”
Mary was beginning to wish she’d ordered real drinks instead of virgins. The lights, the throbbing, thumping music, and the signs all around of sex, had wound her into a state of severe horniness. Being seated in a darkened booth against the wall gave an aura of privacy. She looked up. Dan was intently watching the show. If not for her, he’d be up front with Pete. Did he wish he was?
She wanted his attention. She studied the girl on stage to get some idea of how she used her body. Sighing in frustration, she admitted there was no way she’d ever be able to move to music like that, and what if she
