his lips. âAre you absolutely sure?â
âWhat is it?â his wife asked anxiously.
Mr. Bing held up a finger. âRight â weâll be there as soon as we can.â He hung up and dialed Griffinâs cell. The call went straight to voicemail.
âWhatâs going on?â Mrs. Bing demanded.
Her husbandâs face was gray. âGriffinâs disappeared.â
âWhat do you mean, âdisappearedâ?â
âHe and one other camper never came to the mess hall for dinner. No oneâs seen them for at least a few hours.â
They were in the car, heading north, inside of three minutes.
Waiting in line to pay the toll at the Throgs Neck Bridge, Mrs. Bing frowned as a familiar SUV roared past in the E-ZPass lane. âWasnât that Rick Drysdaleâs car?â
âWith Griffin missing, I hardly think thatâs our number one priority right now.â
âGriffinâs missing
along with one other camper
,â she persisted. âIsnât Savannah at Ebony Lake, too?â
When the phone rang inside the SUV, Mr. Drysdale had no time for a conversation. âSorry, canât talk now. Weâre heading up to Ebony Lake. Savannahâs gone missing.â
âSo has Griffin,â Mrs. Bing told him. âHow much do you want to bet that, wherever they are, theyâre together?â
A quarter mile farther on, the Bingsâ van pulled alongside the stopped SUV on the shoulder. Mrs. Bing and Mr. Drysdale rolled down their windows.
âWhat do you think the kids have gotten themselves into this time?â Mrs. Drysdale called anxiously.
Mrs. Bing didnât answer. She was staring at a sedan that had just sped past them on the highway. âWasnât that Pete and Estelle Slovak?â
It took a moment for the significance of that statement to sink in.
âHow could Ben be with Savannah and Griffin?â Mr. Drysdale asked. âHe went to a different camp entirely.â
Griffinâs mother was already dialing her phone. âThereâs one way to find out.â And when Mrs. Slovakâs voice came on the line, she asked, âEstelle â is everything all right with Ben?â
Benâs mother sounded distraught. âEndless Pines just called. Nobodyâs seen Benjamin since â â Sudden silence on the line. âHow could you know somethingâs wrong?â
âGriffin and Savannah Drysdale have vanished from Ebony Lake.â
Mrs. Slovak was amazed. âAnd you think theyâre with my Benjamin? These camps are scattered across the north woods, with no transportation at all! Thatâs impossible.â
âOne thing Iâve learned from Griffin is that
nothing
is impossible,â Mrs. Bing said in a determined tone.
âIâm going to call the Benson girlâs family,â Mrs. Slovak decided. âShe was at camp with Benjamin. Maybe theyâve heard something from her.â
When Mrs. Slovak finally reached Pitchâs father, she made an alarming discovery: Pitchâs parents were at a rest area on the New York State Thruway about ten miles ahead. While stopped to ask directions to Camp Endless Pines, they had spotted the Kellermansâ car at the gas pump. And in the Kellermansâ backseat were none other than Mr. and Mrs. Dukakis.
âAre you saying that Antonia, Logan, and Melissa all disappeared from their camps today?â Benâs mother cried.
Mr. Benson was stunned. âHow did you know?â
Mrs. Slovak was hyperventilating as she gasped out the details of the missing Griffin, Savannah, and Ben.
Six campers AWOL. Six Cedarville friends. Six members of Griffinâs team.
This was no coincidence. There was only one thing it could possibly be.
A plan.
T he two parent parades sped north on the Thruway, connected via cell phone conference call. At a fuel stop, all five vehicles met up, and the two groups merged into one. The procession
