stood up, lifting her up with him and he looked down at her shining hair. “Honey, if you’re going to fish, then you’re going to have to toughen up about the fish.”
She shook her head. “Nope. Not going to fish then.”
He wasn’t exactly sure how to handle this but knew that laughing would be bad. He didn’t want to hurt her feelings. “But you eat fish and meat, right?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “Yes, of course. But that’s from the grocery store.”
He waited a moment, trying to see if she would make the connection, the realization that they were one and the same. “And that meat is different?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “Of course!” And then she bent down to pick up her fishing rod and soggy hat.
He wasn’t going there. He and the guys all had boats and, during the spring and summer months, they would often go out deep sea fishing. It was a thrill to pull in the large fish and then grill them up that evening. With a sigh, he accepted that he’d have to lie to Andie during those meals, and just tell her that he’d gotten their catch from the grocery store.
He didn’t think it was odd that he was already thinking of including her in those future meals. Tyla and Violet had been there for the past few grilling nights and he knew that Andie already fit in perfectly with those two ladies.
“Come on. I’ll buy you a burger,” he teased, and put an arm around her waist as he led her off of the dock.
Chapter 6
“What’s next, Andie?” Knox asked, as he leaned against the doorway of her kitchen. His eyes glanced down at the basket by her basement doorway and realized there were far fewer tennis balls this Friday night than there had been last week.
He was going to have to ask about that but…well, he wasn’t positive she would give him an answer he would understand. So he kept putting it off.
Once again, he was back in her cozy house having dinner with her. It hadn’t even been a formal invitation for this meal. She’d just sort of asked if he was coming over for dinner again and he’d agreed. They’d eaten several of their meals together over the past couple weeks. He was really going to miss these cozy dinners at the end of the day when she realized she had to leave and go back home.
In the meantime, he wondered why he continued to put himself through such pain. Watching Andie move around her house, seeing her in either leggings that hugged her delectable bottom or those jeans that almost made him pant with the need to touch her… Nope. Don’t go there, he told himself firmly. He knew that she was still waiting for an answer from him about having an affair. It had been two weeks since she’d propositioned him and…was he waiting for her to bring it up again?
He rubbed a hand over his face, trying to think clearly. Andie was saying something about her students and he was trying to figure out how to get the woman into bed. He shouldn’t be thinking like that! He should be trying to come up with reasons why she should get out of Winthrop and be safe.
But he couldn’t. She was having too much fun learning all of her new Alaska skills, and the students really loved her. If he didn’t know better, he might think she was truly thriving here.
Winter. He had to keep reminding himself that winters were brutal and Andie wasn’t prepared.
Andie pulled the chicken and stuffing casserole out of her oven and sighed with satisfaction. “Skiing,” she announced with excitement.
Setting the casserole on the table, she smiled with pleasure as she stared at the perfectly cooked meal. “Did you know that I didn’t even know how to cook until a year ago?”
That was surprising, since she was a great cook, he thought. “Why is that?”
He couldn’t imagine her not cooking. She was a great cook, very creative and the meals were nutritious and hearty. And she took such pleasure in
