don’t mind, Jane. I’ll need to be up at the crack of dawn to go to my brother’s to see if he wants anything. I have a feeling it’s going to be a busy day tomorrow.”
“I thought you probably would be getting up early,” Jane replied. “I think Justin will need you as well.......Paul, I can’t help thinking how weird all this is.”
    “What do you mean?”
“I can’t quite put my finger on it. For a start, there’s been yet another murder here. It’s such a small community that it seems unreal. And then there's Lucy having an affair which seems so out of character, although from what Kevin said, it’s not.......”
“I know,” Paul butted in. “I find it all hard to believe as well. On top of everything, I keep thinking about Christmas and memories of my mother have started to flash through my mind. It’s very unsettling. And I’m worried about Kevin. He was so angry with Lucy before she died and now he’s showing hardly any emotion at all.”
“You don’t think he did it, do you?” Jane asked nervously, hoping that this wouldn’t upset Paul.
Luckily it didn’t. Paul was thinking exactly the same thing.
“God, I’d like to say no, I really would, but the other day he told me he despised Lucy. There was so much venom in his voice. And he would have had time to do it before going to the airport. I’m sure he would.”
Jane shivered and moved closer to hug Paul.
“You’re right; this does bring back awful memories of Christmas. Oh dear, I hope Eve doesn’t start hunting for the murderer again. It would be just like her, wouldn’t it?”
    Paul laughed.
“Yes, it would. I bet David’s going berserk!”
“Don’t laugh, Paul. It could be the end of their relationship if she does. David was so worried about her last time that it drove him to despair. He even went as far as leaving her.”
“Yes, but he went back to her after I .....”
Paul’s voice trailed off, remembering when he had attacked Eve at Kevin and Lucy’s Christmas party. He didn’t know what had come over him that evening to make him act in such a foolish manner.
Paul had fallen for Jane as soon as he had set eyes on her, but Eve had got involved in the situation by attempting to pair up Jane with James Anderson, angering Paul to such an extent that he lost control. However, even if Eve hadn’t interfered, Jane had been infatuated with James from the moment she saw him and Paul was invisible to her.
James Anderson was Paul’s biological cousin. He murdered Paul’s real mother, Jennifer Anderson and later poisoned Paul, Jane and Eve, leaving them tied up in his house while he escaped. It was then that Jane started to fall in love with Paul, much to his delight. James was now dead, killed by a female accomplice who had never been found.
“Don’t think about that terrible time,” Jane said to Paul. “Eve’s forgiven you completely for attacking her.”
“I know she has, but I still feel guilty. I do have a bit of a temper now and again. I wish I didn’t”
     Jane kissed Paul.
How on earth could I have fallen for that smarmy James when such a kind, thoughtful man as Paul was so close by? Yes, he does get angry sometimes, but it’s his only flaw.
Paul’s mind started to drift as he held on to Jane.
I hope nobody heard me having that argument in the street with Lucy a couple of weeks ago. I was so engrossed in the fight; I couldn’t say if anybody went by. I was so angry with her. Not only was she making Kevin miserable, she was hurting Justin - and he’s such a nice young man. I told her that if she didn’t change her attitude, she’d be sorry. If someone overheard, I’d definitely be a suspect. I won’t tell Jane. It’ll only worry her.
Jane meanwhile had her own problems. Holding onto Paul, she suddenly remembered something. She had seen Lucy with Yiannis Neonakis about a month ago. How could she have forgotten this? They were under a tree and they were laughing. Then Yiannis
