plant air kisses on her cheeks.
âHello, Karen. What can we do for you today?â
The woman opened her bag and produced her journal of wedding plans. âI had a thought about the wedding favours. Sugared almonds are so passé, and I wondered if handmade chocolate truffles might be better.â
âFine. Iâm sure that wonât be a problem.â She waited for Karen to work her way through the usual list of alterations, but Karen returned the book to her bag.
âI saw Evan Davies the other day.â Karen smiled at her. âYou and he were rather close at one time, werenât you?â
Nathalie pinned a smile to her face. Karen had always been nosy. âEvanâs an old friend. Itâll be nice to have him back in town.â
âYou know he was married to Laurel Hunter?â Karen delivered the information with the air of someone who had uncovered a state secret.
Tension built in Nathalieâs jaw as she tried to keep her smile in place. âOh yes, I believe itâs common knowledge.â She wasnât certain it was, but knew it would wipe the smirk off Karenâs immaculately made-up face if it looked like she didnât have the inside track.
âHe has custody of the child, doesnât he? Itâs a very strange affair, in my opinion. The mother nearly always gets custody.â Karen sniffed.
âIâm sure the courts have their reasons for Polly being in Evanâs care.â Nathalie glanced around to look for Gemma, hoping she might come to the rescue. She had, however, disappeared back into the storeroom.
âHave you seen them, then?â Karen fingered the edge of a diamante-spangled veil with ill-disguised interest.
âEvan came to Nateâs wedding reception.â Nathalie itched to smack Karenâs pointy-nailed fingers away from the delicate lace.
âI didnât realise youâd stayed in touch. Didnât he disappear and leave you in the lurch before?â
âYou shouldnât believe everything you hear. Like I said, weâre old friends.â She had no intention of letting on that she hadnât even known Evan would be at the reception. Karen was one of the biggest gossipmongers in town.
âWell, when you see him next, remember me to him, wonât you? Perhaps you could bring him to my wedding rehearsal?â
Nathalie thought she would rather stick forks in her eyeballs, but she continued to smile at her customer. âIf I see him, Iâll ask.â She crossed her fingers surreptitiously behind her back.
âMarvellous, darling. Well, Iâd better be getting along.â Karen hitched her bag onto her shoulder and patted her auburn hair into place.
âIâll sort out the wedding favours for you and call to confirm.â
She looked blank for a moment. âOh yes, of course. Thatâll be super. Bye, then.â The shop door closed behind Karen. Nathalieâs shoulders sagged with relief.
âIs it safe to come out?â Gemma slipped back through the curtains.
âYes, sheâs gone.â
âHereâs a fresh coffee. I thought youâd need it.â
âI need a brandy after Iâve seen her.â Nathalie accepted the mug with a grateful sigh.
âWhat did she want this time?â
âIâm not quite sure. She said she wanted to change the wedding favours, but she was more intent on trying to dig up information on Evan. Oh, and she wants me to invite him to her wedding rehearsal.â Nathalie pulled a face.
Gemma looked baffled. âWhy?â
Nathalie shrugged. âI told you Evanâs ex-wife is Laurel Hunter? Well, Karen likes to think sheâs the queen bee of every social event in town, doesnât she? You can bet sheâd be on to the press like lightning if Evan went to the rehearsal, just so she could make the society column.â
âKarenâs whole wedding is one big drama. No one else would turn
