Luke!â
She could hear Luke behind her, and then Adam roared, âLuke, stop now ! Donât go in the woods! Itâs too dangerous! Callie!â She looked back. Luke had stopped and Adam and the woman were running toward them. What was in there? Callie slowed and then came to a halt. Neither animal was in sight now. The agents and Luke jogged up to her, Theo coming behind.
âDonât go in the woods,â Adam repeated, his voice totally unlike the friendly one she had heard just a few minutes ago. He didnât even look the same. She could see the tension in his body, like he was ready to leap at something.
âAdam, whatâs going to happen to Comet?â Luke sounded panicked. âIs the defense system on? It could kill Comet, couldnât it?â
âCalm down, Luke,â Adam said. âIâll notify the camp commander and have them stop the testing until we can get Comet. They may not even be testing that section of the woods right now.â Adam moved away.
âWhat kind of defense system do you have here that will kill animals?â Callie asked. âThereâsnothing like that at the ranch.â
âItâs new. These boxes are mounted on the trees and they send out this radiation, kind of like microwave rays, and they cause so much pain you think youâre on fire before you pass out.â Luke was talking so fast his words were tumbling over one another. âI overheard my dad say that it killed some goats when they tested the prototype. Why did you bring a cat here anyway?â Lukeâs voice rose to a yell. âComet could get hurt!â

Trapped
Luke could feel his insides twisting up, and in his fury he wanted to hit someone. He tried to get around Isabelle, but the agent grabbed him.
â Luke! Get control of yourself!â she ordered.
âHow far away is it?â Through his rage Luke heard the worry in Adamâs voice and saw he was on his cell phone. Behind him, Luke could see that people were pouring out of the buildings. A group of Marines started jogging up the main road.
âWhatâs going on, Adam?â Isabelle asked.
Adam snapped his phone shut. âThe forest fire east of here Sal called in is spreading. Just as a precaution, we are all going to go back toWashington. The camp will be shut down until the fire is under control. Thereâs an evacuation plan we have practiced, so letâs just follow the procedure. Sal is meeting us in front of Aspen.â
âAdam, what about Comet!â Luke tried to keep his voice down. âWere they testing that section?â
âComet will be fine,â Adam said. âThe testing has halted so we can evacuate. Iâm sure the fire wonât spread this far, and weâll send someone back for Comet as soon as we can.â
âI think I smell the fire,â Callie said suddenly. âHow close is it?â She wrapped her arms around herself.
âIf you can smell it, itâs probably not too far away,â Theo said. âI think I can smell it too.â
Callie gave a strangled whisper: âI donât like fire.â
âIsabelle, call for another agent to join us ASAP,â Adam said. âLuke, you can stand at the edge of the woods and call for Comet. Heâll come back. We have a few minutes before the cars are ready. As soon as another agent gets here, Iâm going to go talk to Sal and work out some details. Letâs do this one step at a time, but you have to promise not to go into the woods.â Adam moved closer as if afraid Luke would bolt.
âIâm not leaving without Comet.â Luke walked toward the forest and stopped just on the edge. Both agents followed a step behind.
âHeâll come back. Why donât you two help Luke call for him?â Adam said to Theo and Callie.
âComet!â Luke screamed. âComet!â He wished he had trained Comet better. He meant to, but he had
