mess.â
Cora described Sherry in terms that would have impressed your average drill sergeant.
Sherry said nothing, piloted the Toyota around the curve.
After a while, Cora said, âI canât let her get away with it.â
âOh, no.â
âI canât, Sherry. I have Chief Harper to think of. If I did nothing and he got fired, Iâd feel awful.â
âPlus Minami would win.â
âThatâs not the point. True, rubbing her nose in it would be an added bonus. Itâs really for Chief Harper.â
âWhat do you have to do?â
âWhat I have to do is prove Mrs. Fielding wasnât having an affair.â
âIsnât that next to impossible?â
âWhy?â
âItâs proving a negative. Isnât that what you always say? If sheâs having an affair, itâs easy to prove. If sheâs not having an affair, you have to prove there was no opportunity whatsoever for her to have an affair. Which is damn near impossible.â
âYouâre learning,â Cora said.
âIâm glad to hear it. The point is, how do you plan to do it?â
âIâll start with the neighbors.â
âDonât you think Minamiâs done that?â
âYeah. Maybe I should just ask her ,â Cora said sarcastically.
âAccording to Minami, the woman never had visitors but often went out.â
âDoes that mean the neighbors are no help?â
â Youâre certainly no help.â
Sherry smiled. âNothing like competition to bring out the best in you.â
âYeah, right.â
Sherry turned into the drive.
There was a black rental car parked in front of the house.
âWho the hell is that?â Cora said.
âI have no idea.â
âExpecting someone?â
âNo.â
âIf thatâs our Japanese friend, Iâm going to send her packing.â
Sherry pulled up next to the car and stopped.
Dennis Pride got out.
Cora flung open the door, hopped out, and put herself between Dennis and her niece.
âSherry, call the cops!â
Dennis put up his hand. âPlease.â
âThatâs closer than a hundred yards.â
âI need to talk to you.â
âNo, you need to leave. Sherry, get inside!â
âDennis, please.â
âDonât talk to him!â Cora snapped. âYouâre just playing into his hands. Go on. Get inside.â
âIâm not leaving you alone with him.â
Cora reached into her drawstring purse and pulled out her gun. âIâll be fine. If he doesnât leave, Iâll shoot him.â
Dennis smiled. âNo, you wonât.â
âWanna bet?â
âItâs not even loaded.â
Cora pointed the gun at the sky, pulled the trigger. The report was deafening. She trained the smoking gun on Dennis. âChange your mind?â
âNow, see here.â
âSherry, make the call.â
âIâm trying to tell you something. Donât you want to know that Japanese womanâs been snooping around?â
âGood-bye, Dennis.â
âI did a little snooping myself. Guess what I found out?â
Cora glowered at him. Still, she couldnât help asking, âWhatâs that?â
âMrs. Fielding had a boyfriend.â
Chapter 17
Steve Preston was a handsome young man, with a square jaw and a crewcut, and lithe muscles rippling under his fashionably casual suit. âUh oh. Whatâs wrong?â
âWhy should anything be wrong?â
âYouâre the Puzzle Lady. When you show up, people die.â
âI wondered how long it would take to get that reputation. As it happens, someone is dead. Mrs. Fielding.â
âOh.â
âYou know her?â
âSure. Jasonâs wife.â
Cora raised an ironic eyebrow. âYeah. Thatâs probably the best way to refer to her.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âRumor has
