with Trina on this one. Universal force for good.â
âThanks, Lucy,â said the girl in faded clothing, offering a shy smile. She played absently with her shoulder-length hair.
âSo Iâve heard from everyone except you two,â Cynthia said, pointing at Ryan and Susan. âWhatâve you got for me?â
Before Ryan could answer, Susan picked up her lunch and stood up.
âI ⦠have to go,â she said, and she turned and walked away quickly.
âOh, man,â said Ryan.
âDid we offend her?â asked Lucy.
âLike thatâd be hard,â muttered the blond boy in black pants.
âBrad!â said Lucy. âThatâs not nice.â
âMaybe,â the blond boy replied. âBut itâs true.â
âIâd better go check on her,â Ryan said, rising slowly to his feet.
âNo!â Fallon jumped up and stepped in front of him. âNo, you stay here if you know whatâs good for you!â He automatically held up his hands to block Ryan, then remembered he was insubstantial in this world.
âWho said that?â Trina asked, her head snapping up.
âWho said what?â Ryan asked, stopping.
âThatâs right, stay here,â Fallon said. âDo not go with that human leech.â
âThere it is again!â said Trina. âA voice! He called Susan a le ech.â
âWhat?â said Fallon, turning to look at her.
âCome on, who said that?â Trina glanced from friend to friend.
âI didnât,â said Peter.
âWasnât me,â said Brad.
âTrina, are you hearing things again?â Cynthia asked.
Oh yes she is, Fallon thought. She heard me loud and clear. This could be useful.
And Ryan stayed! He sat back down again, though he did look nervously in the direction Susan had gone. Maybe my comments actually reached him, Fallon thought. Or mayb e Ryanâs just better at denying her than I was. Either way, he might just stand a chance.

F allon remained with the group of teens for the rest of the lunch hour, but he said no more. He didnât want to freak the girl out, not if he was going to ask for her help later.
From what he could gather from the group, this wasnât the first time Trina had heard voices. First sheâd confided only in Cynthia, then the rest of them.
Fallon also learned that the group didnât much like Susan, either.
âDonât know who your invisible guy is, Trina,â said Peter, âbut he got Susanâs number, all right.â
âTotally,â added Brad.
âYou guys ⦠â said Lucy, but only half-heartedly.
âShe has a lot of problems,â Ryan said. âShe doesnât make friends easily.â
She told you that too, did she? Fallon thought.
âRemember,â Ryan added, âshe only transferred here a couple weeks ago. She wanted to get away from her old school because her best friend there committed suicide.â
âOh,â Brad said. âOh, man.â
âThat poor girl,â Cynthia added.
So thatâs why sheâs here, Fallon thought. I wonder who that friend was, who killed himsel f ? The only person she was friends with was ⦠oh, right.
âSo, Trina,â Peter asked, âis that voice guy still around?â He said it with what Fallon knew to be a patronizing smile. Not a believer, it seemed.
âI canât hear anything,â Trina said. âLook, Iâm sorry I mentioned it. Letâs talk about something else, okay?â
They did. Fallon watched them, and as he did so he made contact with their hearts. No sense wasting a good opportunity, right? He checked out Peter first, and learned he had a thing for Lucy. She was sitting next to him, which was a good sign, but when Fallon touched Lucyâs heart he found no interest for Peter. Indeed, she didnât seem interested in anyone in the group.
Fallon moved on. Brad was open
