puppies.
âCongratulations,â said Elfwyn. âTheyâre, um, adorable.â
âUm, yeah. Thatâs great,â said Jinx. âWhy didnât you try to stop the Bonemaster?â
âYouâre aware that heâs an extremely powerful wizard?â said Malthus. âQuite aside from being the other wick, of course.â
âYes, butââ said Jinx.
âI had no desire to be burnt to a crisp, or turned into a toad,â said Malthus. âSo I took cover behind that tree over there, and lurked.â
Some help you are, Jinx didnât say. âHow long ago was this?â
âAbout six days,â said Malthus. âI tried to come andtell you, but itâs difficult to get near your lair with all those people running around. People so often misunderstand werewolves.â
âAnd we so often donât. I was away anyway,â said Jinx.
âSix days ago?â said Elfwyn. âThatâs before I left Bonesocket. I think heâd been back and forth through the portal a lot of times before then.â
âItâs quite possible,â said Malthus. âAs I said, I havenât been around much. What I donât understand, though, is how he knew the portal was here.â
Blue-green guilt from Elfwyn.
She told him something, Jinx thought. But they didnât need to talk about this in front of Malthus.
âI must say I envy him,â said the werewolf, gazing at the portal. âThe libraries of Samara!â He gave a hungry sigh, then turned to Jinx. âWas it there that you saw the Eldritch Tome?â
âYes,â said Jinx, not adding that heâd brought it home with him. He wondered if Malthus would be able to help Sophie decipher the Tome. Preferably without eating Sophie. Heâd have to talk to Sophie about it. Meanwhileâ âWe have to work on this ward spell.â
Malthus gave Jinx a thoughtful look. âThen Iâll just be slinking off.â
He did so.
âHe doesnât like to hang around when Iâm doing magic,âsaid Jinx. âIn case he accidentally eats me while Iâm concentrating. Did youââ He stopped himself. âI guess you must have told the Bonemaster that the portal was here. But howâI mean, I donât know how you knew.â
âWell, I knew something was here,â said Elfwyn. âBecause when I came to my grandmotherâs cottage to visit you last year, she told me where the Wanderers had found you. And I went to look for the place. And there was the ward spell, of course, I noticed that. Andâwell, the Bonemaster asked me a lot of questions. Iâm sorry.â
âItâs not your fault,â said Jinx. Except that you insisted on being at the Bonemasterâs house to begin with, he didnât add. âThe Bonemasterâs really good at asking questions. Heâs gotten stuff out of me whenever Iâve talked to him, and I donât even have a curse on me. He makes me tell him things I didnât even know I knew.â
Jinx said this to make her feel better, but he could see it wasnât working. The fact was, the Bonemaster finding the portal was a disaster. And Elfwyn knew it.
âAre you good atâI mean, I wonder if ward spells are something youâre good at,â said Jinx.
âSo-so,â said Elfwyn. âHe didnât really want me to learn them, so I had to work it out on my own. I can see what youâve done here. Itâs really strong, but it doesnât have enough exclusions.â
âYeah,â said Jinx. âI know.â
They worked on the ward together. They told it to keep anybody, anybody at all, from passing through.
Once again Jinx found that the Urwaldâs lifeforce wasnât all there. When he tried to pull power into the spell, something pulled back.
He didnât tell Elfwyn this.
Instead he explained how the KnIP portal worked, and he was rather
