And there was a nearly full jar of the same stuff in the refrigerator.â
Renz uncrossed his legs and crossed his arms, thinking about that. âSomebody else bought the groceries. Somebody who didnât know the Elzners had plenty of jelly.â
âJam.â
âStill odd, though. Two jarsâ¦â
âMaybe they were a gift from somebody who knew how much one or both of the Elzners liked that kind of jam.â
âA gift.â Renz made a steeple of his fingers. He liked the idea of a gift, except forâ¦âBut why would somebody buy the Elzners a gift and then kill them?â
âMaybe he hadnât planned on killing them.â
âMaybe.â Renz grinned. âAnd he just happened to be carrying a gun equipped with a silencer. The important thing is, if youâre right, it points to a third party for sure. A killer still on the loose.â
âA third party who mightâve left before the Elzners were killed.â
Renz sneered at Quinn. âDonât send me up, then bring me down. Youâre coming around to my way of thinking about this case; you know you are.â
âIâve moved in that direction,â Quinn admitted. He didnât want Renz to think heâd moved almost all the way. âAlso, it might be coincidental that the plastic grocery bags arenât the kind that have the name of the store on them. Or it could be the killer deliberately bought groceries someplace where they couldnât be traced by the bags and someone might remember him.â
âVery good, Quinn. I was sure youâd have a different slant on this and come up with something new. You didnât disappoint me.â
âIâm flushed with pride. Are you here to tell me anything new?â
âYeah. Iâm afraid things have changed. Egan found out youâre on the case. I think from a uniform named Charlie Mercer.â
âBig, square-shouldered guy, blue and brown?â
âFits him.â
âHe was coming out of the elevator in the Elznersâ building when I stepped in.â
âHe get a good look at you?â
âLike I got at him.â
âThen thereâs no mistaking it; the bastard mustâve told Egan.â Renzâs brow furrowed. âMercerâs made a mistake. One heâll pay dearly for, and sooner than he thinks. Eganâs probably already notified the chiefâs office. Maybe somebody in the news media. That last wonât help him.â
âWhy not?â
Renzâs forehead relaxed, but the furrows didnât fade away. âBecause Iâve gone on the offensive. Iâve notified all my media contacts Iâve taken a chance on a good manâthatâd be you. The safety of the community comes before NYPD politics and petty revenge, so Iâve asked Frank Quinn to look into the Elzner case because heâs the best. If the storyâs not already on the news, it will be soon, before Eganâs. The department wonât move to take you off the case, because itâd be bad PR. There was never a criminal charge and a trial in the rape case. The publicâll see you as a hero, Quinn. A victim of unsubstantiated rumor who deserves a second chance. Iâve also assigned a team of detectives to work under your command.â
Quinn was surprised. âTeam?â
âTwo detectives, but youâll have additional temporary help, if and when you need it.â Renz leaned forward on the sofa. âYou know how it works, Quinn. The killing of a typical Manhattan couple means media by the shit load. Media means pressure. Can you deal with it?â
âI can deal. This teamâ¦are these good cops youâre giving me?â
âSure, they are. Your old partner from your radio car years, Larry Fedderman, and his new partner, Pearl Kasner.â
Fedderman. Quinn almost smiled. Other than the people whoâd set him up, Fedderman was probably the only one
