stock of herself.
âIâm alive,â croaks Malik. âNo thanks to Laska.â
âKid?â comes an anxious voice from above. Itâs the cop, and heâs more worried than mad.
Itâs a good news/bad news kind of thing. Itâs good that nobodyâs hurt. But then he disappears, which can only mean one thing.
Heâs coming after us.

MALIK BRUDER
I should kill Amber for putting us through this.
But right now Iâm too busy running for my life.
One by one, we climb out of the Dumpster and drop to the pavement. Weâre covered in coffee grounds and pizza grease, and my nose is bleeding. But under the circumstances, weâre lucky.
We dash down the alley to the next street, and find an even narrower alley off of there. We hug the wall, peering out just in time to see the police cruiser pass by on the main road, our cop hunched over the wheel, looking from side to side.
Thanks so much, Laska. We donât have enough trouble with Project Osiris on the hunt for us. We need the law breathing down our necks. If that cop catches us, it wonâtbe just Amber whoâs in trouble. Heâll arrest all four of us this time. I wonder if thereâs such a crime as aiding and abetting a moron.
âWeâve got to get out of here,â Amber says urgently.
âYou think?â I ask sarcastically.
Eliâs not so sure. âMaybe it makes more sense to lie low.â
Laska shakes her head. âHis car has a police radio in it. I heard it while we were driving to the medical buildingâall these cops telling each other what to watch for. He could have every officer in Denver on the lookout for four kids.â
Itâs not good. If the Purples hear about four runaways, itâs not going to take them long to put two and two together. Either theyâll find us first, or the cops will, and weâll be sitting ducks in a cell when Serenityâs goon squad comes to drag us back to Happy Valley. We can try to explain whatâs happened. But Laskaâs already proven how believable our clone story is out here in the real world.
âWe could separate, and meet back when the heatâs off,â Tori suggests.
âNo way!â I exclaim. âTwo stupids donât make a smart. We almost got ourselves killed getting Laska back. Weâre not going to break up on purpose.â
âWe need to stick together,â Eli agrees. âBut we also needto be miles away from where theyâre going to be searching for us. How do people get around a city?â
âWe had the Purplesâ car,â I remind him, âbut that wasnât good enough for you.â
âWe had to ditch it,â Eli defends the decision. âThe Purples were following us by air.â
âPeople take buses,â Tori reasons, âand trainsââ
âThose things are full of passengers,â Eli cuts in. âSomeone is bound to remember four kids and where they got off.â
âWhat about a taxi?â Amber suggests.
âEven worse,â Eli replies seriously. âThe driver could be listening to the radio and hear about the search. At best heâd know exactly where he dropped us. At worst, we could be still in the car when it happens.â
âWell, what are we supposed to do?â I ask belligerently. âFlap our arms and fly?â
While we stand there, looking helplessly at each other, a police car cruises by on the street at the opposite end of our alley. I can tell weâre all wondering the same thingâis that the same cop, or has he sounded the alarm, and weâre already being surrounded?
âWhat we need,â Tori muses, âis a ride from someone who doesnât know heâs giving us a ride.â
âOh, right!â I explode. âLike thereâs somebody that blind or that stupid!â
We hear a loud grinding sound as a truck gears down to come to a halt. For a moment, it fills
