think itâll mesh with yours. Itâs practically impossible to get close to her. Weâve known her for years, but we still donât know much about her.â
âMaybe she doesnât like you very much,â he joked.
But Pete remained serious. âIâm not kiddinâ, man. Aliciaâs real sweet, outgoing, and considerate, but sheâs not like most women. I know youâve been with women who were clingy and demanding, and so have I, before I met Rhonda. But Alicia can love âem and leave âem as good as any man.â
Jackâs eyes narrowed in suspicion. âAnd how would you know that?â
âRhonda shared some things Alicia told her with me. Girl talk kind of things. She probably shouldnât have told me, but I donât think Alicia would feel betrayed if she knew Rhonda repeated a few things she said. After all, Iâve known her almost as long as Rhonda has.â
âWhat did Rhonda tell you?â
âApparently, Alicia chafes at feeling fenced in. Nor does she feel that sheâs got to be in love with a man to sleep with him. Iâm not saying sheâs easy, Jack, she just feels urges like the rest of us and acts on them. Alicia makes no demands on people and canât stand for anyone to make demands of her. She might as well be surrounded by the Great Wall of China. I donât think youâll be able to get through it. And I know you wonât be happy if she spends the night with another man just days after being with you. Sheâs the type whoâll probably never settle down. But donât say I didnât warn you.â
âIâll consider myself warned. But Pete, if you think I wonât be able to get next to Alicia, then all I can say is you donât know Jack.â
Chapter 9
A Taste of Honey
J ack made sure he arrived at the restaurant fifteen minutes early. He wanted to be there to greet Alicia when she arrived.
âDevlin is the name. I have a reservation for eight oâclock. Iâm meeting someone,â he told the maître dâ.
The middle-aged man nodded knowingly. âYes, Mr. Devlin. And does the young lady have any distinguishing characteristics?â
âOnly that sheâs stunning,â he promptly replied. âDefinitely too gorgeous to be entering a restaurant alone.â
âIâm sure Iâll recognize her. But just to be on the safe side, would you like to give me her name?â
âMiss Timberlake,â he said, adding, âIâll wait at the bar.â
âVery well, Mr. Devlin. I will bring her to you myself.â
âThanks.â He wandered into the separate bar area, where he sat at the end of the counter and ordered a Scotch and water. The maître dâ seemed amused by his description, but how else could he describeAlicia? With her high cheekbones, gracefully arched brows, and skin so flawless it looked like it had been painted on, she was a goddess.
Two African-American women entered the bar area and sat nearby, leaving just one stool between them. Jack toyed with his Scotch and entertained himself with thoughts of the pleasant evening that lay ahead. He looked over when he heard a question he believed was directed at him.
âHow are you tonight?â a female voice inquired.
He looked over at the women to make sure one of them had addressed him and not some other person. One of them, a striking brown-skinned woman, smiled at him, while the other looked away and appeared uncomfortable. âGood, thanks. You?â
âNot bad. What brings you out tonight?â
âIâm meeting a young lady.â
âMy friend is a young lady,â the woman pointed out. Her friend jabbed her in the ribs and mouthed the words, âStop it!â
He chuckled as the first one said, âOuch! That hurt, Charlene!â Both women appeared to be in their early forties. The one doing the talking wore engagement and wedding
